We are delighted to announce the signing of 2 key players ahead of our title defence at the Whiston festival of brass.
John Parkinson signs on principal cornet and brings over 40 years of experience with top flight bands with him.
Over recent years John has held the position of principal cornet and soprano cornet with Yorkshire Imperial band, Skelmanthorpe band, Wakefield Metropolitan, Knottingley and Lydbrook band.
Our vacancy on 1st horn has been snapped up by Lee Hugill.
Lee started playing with Carlton Main Youth at the age of 11 before progressing onto the Senior Band and helping them regain their top flight status in the late 80’s. He took a break from banding in 1992 and didn’t return to playing again until 2008, some 16 years later, when he took up the Solo Horn seat at Frickley South Elmsall and helped them to achieve 1st section status. Lee Returned to Carlton Main in 2011 for a second period before taking another break from banding in late 2014.
Both of these signings will make their contesting debut with the the band on the 2nd July at Whiston festival of brass in Rotherham.
Strata brass are delighted to announce Derek Renshaw as their new musical director.
Derek will officially take up the post at the end of September.
Derek brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the band having been very successful at this level of banding in the past with Unite the Union and Stannington Bands.
We would like to thank all the applicants who applied for the job and wish them all the best for the future.
On the 18th of January Strata competed in the Butlins contest 1st section; the first time the band has competed at this level. Competing against 21 other bands on ‘Vitae Aeturnum’ (Paul Lovett Cooper) the band placed a very creditable 7th.
On the 23rd of February the band made the short journey to the Post Mill Centre at South Normanton to complete in the NEMBBA contest. Playing the area test piece ‘Cry of the Mountain’ (Howard Lorrimer) the band beat 5 others to claim 1st prize by a clear 2 point margin. The band also won prizes for best Principal Cornet (Mandy Holling), best Soprano Cornet (Danny Bell), best Trombone (Dave Smith) & best Percussion (Robert Hardy, David Fretwell & Faith Bowles). Congratulations to everyone!
In preparation for the challenge of competing in the 1st section in 2014, Strata Brass entered the Holmfirth Contest held on Sunday 9th July. The band were entered in Section A and were up against bands from the Championship, 1st & Second sections.
The contest was an own choice format, consisting of Hymn Tune and Test Piece. Strata’s selections were ‘Aurelia’ and ‘Tallis Variations’.
The run up to the contest required a number of difficulties to be overcome. Due to an injury to Dave Smith (Bass Trombone), after much discussion, David Holling took his place. Special thanks to Huw Thomas for stepping in at short notice to conduct!
Strata were drawn 1st at the contest; feedback from the audience was positive, although as always there is only one opinion that matters. Fortunately the adjudicator’s opinion was favourable & the band were awarded 1st place. Congratulations also go to David Shipman, who was awarded the prize for best Euphonium.
Congratulations to Uppermill & Old Silkstone for their respective 2nd & 3rd places.
Strata Brass would like to express our gratitude to Huw Thomas for stepping in at the last minute. Thanks also to David Holling for the all the preparation work prior to providing a fine, albeit unexpected, performance on Bass Trombone!
