Solo Cornet

Rhys Stokes

Rhys started playing cornet at the age of 7, receiving tuition from Alex Francis via Barnsley Music Service. He joined Barnsley Junior Band and worked his way up the Music Service ensembles to their senior ensembles Barnsley Town Concert Band and Barnsley Metropolitan Band, competing at the 2019 Fourth Section National Finals with Barnsley Met.

Rhys is an active member of a number of youth bands, including Foden’s Youth, Elland Silver Youth Band and several Sheffield Music Hub ensembles including the senior orchestra and wind band. Having moved to secondary school on September 2019 he enthusiastically took up the many extra curricular music opportunities available such as swing band, orchestra and music technology group. He even conducted the school wind group at the school’s Christmas 2019 performing arts showcase concert. Outside brass banding, Rhys has completed courses with the National Youth Jazz Collective and played trumpet with Civic Fusion, a funk and jazz band based in Barnsley. In 2019 he had the opportunity to play Stardust in duet with renowned trumpet soloist Mike Lovatt after a Music Service workshop.

He enjoys competing in slow melody and solo competitions and has won prizes at Holme Valley, Foden’s and Elland solo contests as well as winning the 2020 British Open Junior Slow Melody Champion title. Having seen his Grade 6 exam sitting cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic, Rhys instead sat and passed ABRSM Grade 8 Cornet in July 2021. He was invited to join the The National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain in 2020 and the Opera North Summer Orchestra Academy in 2021.
