Second Cornet

Jacob Waller

Jacob started playing the trumpet at the age of 10, receiving tuition from John Ingman via Barnsley Music Service in his Primary School. He then started receiving tuition from Alex Francis as he started Secondary School at Kirk Balk, Hoyland back in 2016.

Jacob was awarded with Musician of the Year 2017 during his time in secondary school.

He worked his way up through all the music service ensembles, eventually joining both the Senior Ensembles, Barnsley Town Concert Band and Barnsley Metropolitan Band. He is also a member of the trumpet line in the Funk and Jazz Band ‘Civic Fusion’.

Jacob competed at the 2019 Regional Championships with Barnsley Metropolitan Band, achieving second place and qualifying for the 4th Section National Finals in Cheltenham, where he also competed and placed 14th.

He has attended Grimethorpe Youth Band workshops, with tutors from Grimethorpe Colliery Band, as well as being involved in different workshops within the Music Service including with the Principal Cornet of the Black Dyke Band, Richard Marshall and the fantastic trumpeter Mike Lovatt.

He really loves being in the Brass Band world, and he hopes to progress, in the future, to the top bands such as Brighouse and Grimethorpe.

Having seen his Grade 5 sitting cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jacob is aiming to complete Grade 5 theory and sit his Grade 8 in the near future.

He joined Strata in 2021, after 4 years with Barnsley Metropolitan Band, working his way up to the Repiano Cornet seat.

Jacob currently studies Music Performance at Barnsley College, and aims to go onto University to study Musical Directing at Brass Band level at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Favourite pieces: Sugar Blues by Alan Morrison, Movement 2 of Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto.
