Graham Bates

A familiar face at the back of the band, Graham has, over the past 40 years, played with most of the Brass Bands in Yorkshire and the North of England at all levels.

His highlight is undoubtedly winning the 2010 National Finals with Brighouse & Rastrick,
sharing the stage with his son, Jonny (only the third time a dad and lad had won this competition playing in the same band at the same time).

Also currently a member of Hammonds Saltaire and M.D of Thurlstone Band for the past 15 years, Graham balances his music commitments with being the UK Sales Representative for a local Engineering firm based in Skelmanthorpe.

Other banding highlights include playing the xylophone solo “William Tell” in front of 10,000 people on the banks of the Thames, accompanied by YBS, Sun Life Bands and fireworks in 1995, “nailing” the “Toccata in D Minor” on a CD recording in 1999 with Wakefield Metropolitan Band, and playing with the legendary James Shepherd Versatile Brass in the late 1980’s.

Graham organises successful fund raising events for bands and takes pride in the many “slow melody” events which he has run, developing players, young and old, and maintains the philosophy of encouraging and supporting young players at Thurlstone, the Band which gave Jonny his start in music.
